Happy Summer! Visiting us this Summer? Well, you are in luck because this area is filled with wonderful things to do.
Are you the outdoors type? Then take in nature and hike some mountain trails and see a beautiful waterfall. Crabtree Falls is only 13 miles from us. It is the largest cascading waterfall this side of the Mississippi River. The 1.7 mile intermediate hiking trail leads you up along the falls with several overlook areas where the first overlook is just a few hundred feet from the parking lot.
Or take a hike on the Appalachian Trail. You can find it 4 miles from Crabtree Falls and cross over this gorgeous suspension bridge.
Patriotic? Who isn’t especially on July 4th. Lexington holds its annual celebration on the Virginia Military Institute’s (VMI) grounds which starts July 3 and runs through July 5. Hot Air Balloon rides, crafts, live music, BBQ dinners, and other food booths. On the morning of July 4th , the reading of the Declaration of Independence is presented by an American Revolution period-costumed town crier as it was done throughout the 13 States in 1776. And the finale, of course, are the fireworks at 9:30pm.
Sample Virginia Wines? Visit our Virginia wineries that are located within 30 minutes from us and do some wine tasting. Summer kicks off the wine events. Shenandoah Valley Wine & Jazz Festival on June 29 is held at the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton. 11 wineries will participate in this year’s event. Barren Ridge’s Pork and Cork is an event not to be missed. Spend the evening of July 4 enjoying BBQ pulled pork dinner catered by the Southern Inn, music, and great wine on the patio overlooking the Valley and Allegheny Mountains and watching a spectular sunset. And of course the firework show after dark. Rockbridge Vineyards will hold its annual Summer Breeze Wine Festival on July 13 with live music, tastings, and festival fun. $5 admission includes wine tasting and souvenir glass.
Beer drinkers? We have microbreweries too! Devils Backbone Outpost Brewery, located in Lexington, is a great place to sample some brew. The Outpost is where the beer is made so enjoy a pint, sample a paddle of beers in the tap room, or grab a growler to go. And you can even tour the brewery’s facility.
Or just simply want to relax? You can soak in the rays and relax by the Steeles Tavern Manor pool. Whether you are staying in the Bed & Breakfast or the Cottages, come enjoy the pool! Take a walk on the grounds and make your way to the stream. Adirondack chairs and benches are waiting for you to sit and enjoy the day.
If you already have your reservation made for a planned visit here at Alpine Hideaway Cottages or Steeles Tavern Manor then now you have decisions to make on what to do! And you probably won’t get it all in. If you haven’t made your plans yet, then you better hurry. Summer ends in only 3 months!
