Rockbridge Vineyards and Barren Ridge Vineyards are two of our favorite wineries in the area. Both are very close to the cottages.
Rockbridge Vineyards are 2 miles from Alpine Hideaway.
Shep and Jane were one of the first people we met when we arrived in Steeles Tavern. Their wines are as great as they are! We are usually red wine drinkers so we love their Cab Franc and Meritage both consistently winning Virginia Governors Cup awards over the last years. If you like a sweeter red then Rockbridge’s Lexington and Concord is for you (and the label is really cool). For you white wine drinkers try the DeChiel Chardonnay, Tuscarora White or Rockbridge DeChiel Reisling depending on your taste. Actually they are all good. And the Rockbridge tasting room people are so much fun so this is a must stop when you are here. They are open 10am – 6pm 7 days a week. And if you are here on a Sunday you don’t want to miss “Sundays on the Deck”. Bring your chairs and a picnic lunch and enjoy the live music from 2-5pm.

Virginia is for Viognier and Barren Ridge definitely has great Viognier. Great wine for a hot summer’s day. Barren Ridge Vineyards are located about 20 miles north of the Cottages. John and Shelby converted their family’s apple orchard into a beautiful vineyard. The winery is situated high on a ridge in the Blue Ridge Moutains with great views. Their large outdoor patio is a great place to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy one of their fabulous wines. The winery is open 7 days from 11am-6pm and on Fridays and Saturdays in the summer they are staying open until dark. The patio area faces west and has wonderful views of sunset. Every third Friday they have live music on the patio from 7-10pm. Get there early to get a seat and front row view of sunset. You must visit Barren Ridge. Relax on their patio with a lunch or snack and a glass of Barren Ridge wine or go there on a Friday or Saturday evening, do some wine tasting, then enjoy the sunset with a glass of your favorite wine.
